Line Locating FAQ

Frequently asked

Isn't 811 free? Why pay for private locating?

811 only marks public utilities up to the meter or curb. Everything customer-side - irrigation, private power, low-voltage, gas from meter to building - is on the owner to locate. That's the work we handle.

Do you use ground-penetrating radar?

For non-metallic lines and hard-to-detect utilities, yes. Standard sweeps are electromagnetic; GPR is available when the site calls for it.

Can you locate abandoned lines?

Sometimes - it depends on the material and whether we can induce a signal. We've had strong success with abandoned lines across Central Texas.

What utilities can you actually detect?

Metallic pipes and cables (water, gas, electric, telecom, steel and copper), tracer-wired PVC, and - with GPR - non-metallic pipe, conduit and buried structures. We identify what's detectable during the site walk and flag anything that requires potholing to verify.

How accurate are your locate marks?

Horizontal accuracy is typically within a few inches for detectable lines; depth estimates are within roughly 10% under normal conditions. Where verified depth is critical - near gas, fiber or shallow electric - we recommend pairing the locate with hydro-potholing for SUE Level A confirmation.

Do you provide a written report or just paint marks?

Both. Standard delivery is paint and flag marks on the ground plus a site sketch, utility type, estimated depth and confidence level. Engineering-grade deliverables and CAD overlays are available for design and SUE projects on request.

How quickly can you get out for a locate?

Most private locate requests inside the Austin metro are scheduled within 1–3 business days. Same-day and next-morning slots are available when a crew is standing by waiting to dig - call and we'll get you on the schedule.

How much does private utility locating cost?

Priced by site size, number of lines and accessibility. Bundled pricing is available with hydro-potholing when verified depth is required. Send an address and a scope description for a firm quote.
